Berkeley Heights Mayor David Cohen recently vetoed a new $1,235,000 bond ordinance to fund 2 fire vehicles, 4 police cruisers and 4 sport utility vehicles. The controversy started after last year's $10M bond ordinance, which included funding for the 2 fire vehicles, was petitioned by the citizens of Berkeley Heights. The petition resulted in a voter referendum for this November's ballot. Mayor Cohen will not sign the new ordinance because it circumvents the referendum on the unsettled $10M bond ordinance, however the council overturned his veto.
The bond remains unsigned, but it looks like Council President Thomas Battaglia has the authority to sign if Cohen is unwilling.
